Germany to supply Ukraine with seven “Panzerhaubitze 2000” armored howitzers

The government of Germany confirmed this Friday that it will supply Ukraine seven “Panzerhaubitze 2000” type self-propelled howitzers, in addition to the five that the Netherlands has already committed to the same objective.

The Ministry of Defense announced on its Twitter account that the decision, which Germany was “studying” this week, has finally been adopted by Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht.

“The training for the use of howitzers in Germany has been prepared and starts next week,” added the Ministry.

According to German media, the minister, who today is visiting German troops in Slovakia, explained there that the artillery systems to be supplied were not in use by the Bundeswehr (armed forces) but are currently being repaired.

He also explained that in a first phase 20 Ukrainian soldiers who have already used self-propelled howitzers will be trained in the town of Idar-Oberstein (west), in cooperation with the Dutch armed forces.

The “Panzerhaubitze 2000” stand out for their great precision and for the distance at which they can fire their projectiles, which with special ammunition amounts to 40 kilometers.

The German Army has 119 copies, but according to Lambrecht this week only about 40 are operational at the moment, of which six are deployed in Lithuania as part of NATO forces.
