Some 148 people have been killed by the gang war in Haiti, according to NGO

The NGO National Network for the Defense of Human Rights of Haiti (RNDDH) reported this Tuesday that it has recorded 148 murders since a war broke out between two armed gangs in Port-au-Prince on April 24.

The balance of the RNDDH, a non-governmental organization specialized in following cases of human rights violations, doubles the number of fatalities reported by the UN last week, which was 75 dead.

According to the calculation of the RNDHH, among the 148 murdered are 7 members of the Chen Mechan gang who were “executed” by the gang’s leader, Claudy Celestin.

The report provides details on numerous murders, including victims of shootings, machete attacks, house fires, as well as people who were decapitated or charred by burning tires in the middle of the street.

“A massacre of unprecedented cruelty was perpetrated. However, at the highest level of the State, no reaction was registered,” the report continues.

The NGO also documented the burning of 81 homes and 57 vehicles in the neighborhoods where the violence has broken out, in the area known as the Cul-de-Sac plain, in the north of Port-au-Prince.

Thousands of people have been displaced from their homes and have taken refuge in schools, on the streets, or have fled to other cities in Haiti.

The RNDDH assured that, since last May 6, the attacks have ceased and there is an apparent calm that has allowed some families to return to their homes.

The clashes for control of the territory confront the Chen Mechan and 400 Mawozo gangs in Cul-de-Sac, a region that includes the communes of Croix-des-Bouquets and Tabarre.
