Marcelo Pecci: Transnational crime is behind the “appalling” murder of Paraguayan prosecutor, according to Colombia

The authorities of Colombia consider that the “atrocious” murder of the Paraguayan anti-mafia prosecutor Marcelo Puccishot while on his honeymoon on the Caribbean island of Barú, may have been committed by transnational crime due to the investigations he was carrying out.

“The first great hypothesis that we have is that due to their functions, their cases, what was done in large operations, this assassination occurred”indicated this Wednesday the director of the Colombian Police, General Jorge Luis Vargas, at a press conference in Cartagena de Indias.

The crime “It was an assassination against justice committed by a system of transnational organized crime with high planning and investment of resources to commit this act”added the general.

“Our country, like Paraguayis moved by the murder of the prosecutor Marcelo Pucciit has been a heinous crime that reminds us every day of the power of transnational mafias, drug trafficking mafias, organized crime”said the Colombian Vice President and Foreign Minister, Marta Lucía Ramírez.

The suspect in murdering the prosecutor is a man approximately 1.74 meters tall, with a dark complexion and a Caribbean accent, the police chief said.

“The only way to respond to this is first, with intensive cooperation between the States (…) but a greater participation of citizens is also necessary”, the chancellor expressed when referring to the importance of citizen collaboration to find those responsible.

LARGE-SCALE RESEARCH

Colombian authorities are working on “intense” search efforts that include control on highways, airports and border crossingswhile information has been shared with Interpol Y Europol to join the search for suspects.

So far, the Colombian Prosecutor’s Office has compiled more than “100 material pieces of evidence”, said that body, which also participates in the investigation of the crime of Pecci45 years old and specialized prosecutor against Organized Crime, Drug Trafficking, Money Laundering and Financing of Terrorism in Paraguay.

MURDER IN BARU

The murder took place on Tuesday morning in Baruan island that is about 40 minutes by boat from Cartagena de Indias, where Pecci he was on his honeymoon with his wife, the Paraguayan journalist claudia aguilerawith whom he had married on April 30 in Asunción.
