US Congress would approve 40,000 million dollars for Ukraine

Both Democrats and Republicans in Congress USA They were trying on Thursday to pave the way for the approval of 40,000 million dollars in aid to Ukraine and its allies, an economic and military assistance package that seeks to demonstrate the US commitment to counter the Russian invasion.

Senate Republican Minority Leader Mitch McConnell called both political camps “To help us pass this urgent funding proposal today.”

McConnell He intentionally included his own GOP in his statement, at a time when the only opposition to the measure seemed to come from Republicans demanding votes on issues such as the appointment of an inspector general to oversee aid disbursement.

Approval of the proposal seems certain, since it has broad support from both parties.

If approved, it would be the final authorization for a proposal that both Democrats and a majority of Republicans want to quickly send to President Joe Biden so that weapons and supplies can continue to flow to besieged Ukrainians.

“Republicans should not be blocking this proposal”, declared the leader of the Democratic majority in the Senate, Chuck Schumer. “There is no reason, no reason at all not to quickly give Ukraine the funding.”

It was unclear how Republican demands for further votes would be resolved, but such stumbling blocks are usually resolved at the last minute.

Republican Senator Rand Paul, who insists that an inspector general be appointed to oversee spending, stated: “I will not allow an expedited approval of a proposal without something that makes it fiscally responsible.”

The House of Representatives approved the spending bill on Tuesday by a vote of 368 to 57. All Democrats and some Republicans supported it. The only ones who voted against it were Republicans.

The bipartisan support for Ukraine is due in part to reports of atrocities committed by Russian troops. It also reflects the widespread refusal to allow Russian President Vladimir Putin’s launched invasion, which is about to enter its 12th week, to go unanswered.

“Helping Ukraine is not a simple act of philanthropyMcConnell stated. “It is something that affects the national security and vital interests of the United States. We must not allow Russia’s blatant aggression to prosper and we must make it clear that it will have significant costs”, he added.
