Mexico: Three women journalists win the Breach/Valdez Award for Journalism and Human Rights.

The journalists Gloria Piña, Wendy Selene Pérez and Paula Mónaco Felipe won this Thursday the fourth edition of the Breach/Valdez Award for Journalism and Human Rights 2022 for two works on gender violence and femicide and women in criminology and forensic sciences, respectively.

In an act in the City of Mexicothe three women received the award established in memory of Miroslava Breach and Javier Valdez, journalists murdered, respectively, on March 23, 2017 in Chihuahua and on May 15 of that same year in the city of Culiacán, state of Sinaloa.

The jury said it decided to award first place to the work “The survivors forgotten by justice” of Pineapple because the investigation “It is of great relevance since it provides a new narrative about the wide spectrum of victims of gender violence and femicide in our country”, the jury noted.

He also said that his work “looks at women who survived an attempted or attempted femicide, highlights the difficulties they face in accessing justice and contributes to a new and broader narrative that is not restricted only to victims of femicide.”

Pérez and Mónaco Felipe took second place for the investigation “Look at our death, expert woman in Mexico”, that accounts for the battles waged by women in criminology and forensic sciences.

The story, dissected into four parts, shows the lives of several women who, even at the risk of being the next victims, experience femicides from their trenches. The jury recognized this work for its originality.

The organization pointed out that as part of the award, Piña will travel to Europe where she will have various meetings with representatives of the press, international organizations, and institutions for the defense of journalists and human rights.

“The intention of this trip is to expand, first-hand, the information on the situation of those who practice journalism in Mexico”was noted in a statement.

In addition, he will receive a double scholarship at the Universidad Iberoamericana campus Santa Fe, the same award for Pérez and Mónaco Felipe.

The jury indicated that it decided to award two honorable mentions to Gloria Muñoz Ramírez for the work “Samir without reverse” and to Ginnette Riquelme and María Verza for their work “Survivors of acid attack in Mexico join forces.”

In the fourth edition of the Prize, a total of 65 eligible works were received.

The Breach/Valdez Prize for Journalism and Human Rights, established in 2018, recognizes journalistic work focused on the dissemination, promotion, defense and protection of human rights, in the spirit of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of 1948.

The award is promoted by the United Nations Information Center (UNIC) Mexicothe Office in Mexico of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (ONU-DH) and that of Unesco, the Journalism Area of ​​the Universidad Iberoamericana and Ibero-PRENDE, the Agencia France Presse and the Embassies of France and Switzerland in Mexico and Reporters Without Borders (RSF).
