French Prime Minister Jean Castex tenders his resignation to President Macron

Jean Castex today formalized his resignation as Prime Minister of France before the president of the country, Emmanuel Macronannounced the Elysee in a statement.

It was a necessary procedure for a replacement that was already expected and for which the current Minister of Labor, Élisabeth Borne, starts as one of the favorites.

the conservative Castex56 years old, traveled from the Matignon Palace, seat of the Head of Government, to the Elysée Palace, where He handed Macron his resignation letter.

Castex and the other members of the Executive will continue to hold their positions “until the appointment of the new Government,” added the Elysee.

Jean Castexformer mayor of the small town of Prades, near the border with Spain, spent almost two years as French prime ministera position he reached in July 2020 to replace Édouard Philippe, who held the portfolio for three years.

The change of prime minister happens three weeks after the presidential electionswhich served to Macron renew the position, beating the far-right Marine Le Pen, although with a narrower margin than in 2017.

The French president had already indicated that he intended a new political course for the countrywith a head of government with a more social and ecological profile, and even who was a woman.

Therefore, the departure of the center-right Castexwho had already advanced his desire not to renew as prime minister, was an open secret.

Macron appoints the new tenant of Matignon – quite possibly Borne – trusting in an electoral victory of his new coalition “Ensemble” (“Together”) in the legislative elections in mid-June.

However, the prime minister depends on the confidence of Parliament, so in the unlikely event that “Ensemble” does not win in June, his position would be at risk.
