Chinese army conducts maneuvers near Taiwan as a “warning” after Biden’s statements

The Chinese Army announced today that it has carried out maneuvers near Taiwan as a “warning against plotting between separatist forces and USA” after the president of that country, Joe Biden, said that he would intervene militarily if Beijing tries to take the island by force.

“This is a patrol of the Popular Liberation Army (EPL) around Taiwan with the aim of being combat-ready and conducting both sea and air training exercises,” Colonel Shi Yi, spokesman for the PLA Eastern Theater Command, said in a statement today.

Shi noted that the exercises are “a solemn warning against the recent collusion between USA and the ‘Taiwanese separatist forces’”.

“It is hypocritical and useless for the US to take actions completely contrary to its words and frequently embolden the ‘Taiwanese independence forces.’ All these acts of the US will only lead to a dangerous situation and will have serious consequences for themselves”, he stressed.

Taiwan It is part of China. The PLA troops have the necessary determination and ability to thwart interference from any outside forces or secessionist attempts. We will firmly safeguard national sovereignty and security, as well as peace and stability in the region,” the spokesman stressed.

On Monday, China reacted harshly to statements by Bidenwho affirmed from Japan that his country maintains its commitment to defend Taiwanimplying that it would intervene militarily in the face of a potential Chinese invasion of the island, which Beijing considers an “inalienable” part of its territory.

Last October, China and the United States had a similar scuffle over Taiwan after Biden announced an explicit “commitment” to defend the island in the event of a Chinese invasion, before which Beijing demanded that it stop sending “wrong signals”.

China insists on “reunifying” the People’s Republic with the island, which has been governed autonomously since the nationalists of the Kuomintang (KMT) withdrew there in 1949 after losing the civil war against the communists and continued with the regime of the Republic of Chinaculminating in the transition to democracy in the 1990s.

But since then the voices claiming to declare the independence of Taiwan as a sovereign state have gained strength.

This irritates Beijing, whose rhetoric has continued to swell since current Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen came to power in 2016, insisting that “reunification will be achieved.”

The island is also one of the main reasons for conflict between China Y USAmainly due to the fact that Washington is Taiwan’s main arms supplier and would be its greatest military ally in the event of a war with China.

Both countries seem to be pushing the ‘status quo’ created in 1979, when Washington recognized Beijing as the only Chinese government with the understanding that Taiwan would have a peaceful future, to the limit.

The Taiwan Relations Act of that year does not guarantee that USA is going to intervene militarily if the People’s Republic of China attacks the island, but it does not rule it out either.
