The Russian army steals the grain stored in the granaries of the cities it controls, such as Berdiansk, in the southern region of Zaporizhia, and transports it by trucks to the occupied peninsula of crimeafrom where he sends it to Russia, the ombudsman of the Ukrainian people, Liudmyla Denisova, denounced today.

Denisova said, on her Telegram channel, that “a convoy of trucks with grain stolen from the Ascet company was seen on the Melitopol highway”, near Zaporizhia and the Crimean peninsula, which the Russians control since their military occupation in 2014.

The senior official assured that this company had previously refused to cooperate “with the Russian invaders” to move material, although this time it seems that they are doing so.

He added that Berdyansk residents counted more than 30 trucks with trailers loaded with grain in the vicinity of an industrial plant.

According to Denisova, the Russians are also trying to get grain from the port of the occupied Mariupol, on the Sea of Azov, by rail. And for this reason they have urgently started repair work on this railway line.

He also reported that Russia uses the ports of Crimea and, specifically, the coastal city of Sevastopol, to export grain to third countries previously looted in Ukraine.

Thus, the Russian ship Matros Pozynich, which had transported stolen grain to Syria, returned to the Black Sea and was reloaded. After leaving the port of Crimea this ship was instructed to proceed to Beirut.

Denisova stresses that the theft of food from the occupied territories is a violation of the 1949 Geneva Convention relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War and a war crime under article 8 of the Rome Statute of the Criminal Court. International.

For this reason, he asked the UN Commission of Inquiry on Ukraine to take these facts into account in order to judge Russia in the future.

The Ukrainian authorities and other Western countries have denounced that Russia is blocking the exit of products from Ukraine through the Black Sea, especially cereals, which could cause a global shortage crisis.

Ukraine’s Ministry of Agrarian Policy reported in early May that the Russians had stolen between 400,000 and 500,000 tons of grain worth more than $100 million.

Almost all ships loaded with grain leaving Sevastopol carry stolen Ukrainian products, they stressed.
