bouquets wore a long-barreled rifle, bulletproof vest and plenty of ammunition. “That shows the premeditation of this nefarious person in entering a school with total disregard for human life,” Olivarez said.

The massacre at the elementary school Uvaldea town with a high Latino population, was the deadliest shooting in an American school since a gunman killed 20 children and six teachers at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, in December 2012.

After the attack, families waited hours for news about their children. In the town’s civic center, where families were waiting for information about their loved ones, screams and wails broke the silence over and over again. “Do not! Please no!” one man yelled as he hugged another.

“Today my heart is broken” said school district superintendent Hal Harrell. “We are a small community, and we are going to need all of your prayers to get through this.”

The attack came just 10 days after a racist massacre in a Buffalo supermarket, New York, adding to a long string of mass murders in recent years. The prospects for any reform of federal gun regulations are as unlikely as they were after the Sandy Hook shooting.

But the president Joe Biden, appeared ready for a fight as he called for new gun restrictions during a message to the nation hours after the attack. “As a country we must ask ourselves: When in God’s name are we going to take on the arms manufacturers’ lobby? When in God’s name are we going to do what needs to be done?” he asked. “Why are we willing to live with this carnage?”

It was not immediately clear how many people were injured in total, but school district Police Chief Pete Arredondo said there were “several injuries.”

He also shot grandma

The attack on the school started around 11.30. Before heading to school, Ramos shot his grandmother, according to Olivarez. After fleeing that place by car, he crashed it at the school and went inside.

Olivarez said that when local and state agents responded to the scene, they were met with gunfire.

“The aggressor was able to enter a classroom, he barricaded himself inside that room and again began shooting numerous children and teachers who were in that room without regard for human life. He started shooting anyone who got in his way,” he said. “At that moment, a tactical police arrived, who was able to force their way into that classroom. They were also fired upon, but were able to shoot and kill the suspect.”

Uvalde Memorial Hospital reported that 13 injured children were taken there. Relatives of the victims could be seen leaving the scene devastated and crying. Another hospital reported that a 66-year-old woman was in critical condition.

Authorities did not immediately reveal a motive, but identified the assailant as Salvador Ramos, a resident of the same community, about 85 miles west of San Antonio. Law enforcement authorities said Ramos acted alone.
