Israel told the US it had assassinated the Iranian colonel, according to the NYT

Israel reported to USA who was responsible for the death of Revolutionary Guard Colonel Sayyad Khodaei, killed on Sunday with five shots while he was in his car outside his house in Tehran, according to The New York Times, which cites an official of the intelligence services.

The newspaper explains that the Israelis claimed that the assassination is “a warning to Iran to stop the operations of a covert group within the Quds force, known as Unit 840” and whose existence has not been recognized by Tehran.

The NYT notes that Unit 840 is tasked with kidnapping and killing foreigners around the world, including Israeli civilians and officials, according to Israeli government, military, and intelligence officials.

According to the Israeli version reported by the New York Times through its source, the colonel was the deputy commander of this unit and was involved in planning operations beyond Iranian borders.

Last Tuesday, thousands of people attended Khodaei’s funeral amid calls for revenge.

Khodaei was killed on Sunday with five shots as he was in his car outside his house in Tehran, an action carried out by two people traveling on a motorcycle who fled.

Khodaei had fought in Syria as part of the Quds Force, the body responsible for the Iranian Revolutionary Guards’ operations on foreign soil.

The commander-in-chief of the Revolutionary Guards, General Hossein Salami, assured on Tuesday that Iran’s revenge would be “hard”.

The head of the elite body stated that “everyone knows that the Revolutionary Guard avenges the blood of their own.”

The country’s president, Ebrahim Raisí, has already promised revenge for the death of the colonel on Monday.

“I have no doubt that the revenge of this martyr is inevitable,” Raisí said in statements to the media.

Iran has accused the assassination of “world arrogance,” a term used for the United States, but also its allies, such as Israel.

Iran has in the past accused Israel of carrying out assassinations against members of its security forces and nuclear scientists, as well as trying to sabotage Iranian facilities.

The assassination occurred as negotiations to salvage the 2015 nuclear pact gained momentum after the impasse in talks since mid-March.

In fact, one of the obstacles to the agreement is Iran’s insistence that the United States lift the sanctions on the Revolutionary Guards, the organization to which the murdered colonel belonged.
