The president of the ecuadorian assemblyGuadalupe Llori, was dismissed Tuesday night by a legislative majority, accusing her of breach of duties by not calling the plenary for several weeks.

For the cessation of functions of Llori, who did not attend the session, 81 of the 82 present voted, among them the bench of the right-wing Christian Social Party and the leftist Union for Hope, of former president Rafael Correa.

Legislative Vice President Virgilio Saquicela took office to replace Llori.

“I swear to carry out this high function for the benefit of the Ecuadorian people… what interests the country is pragmatism, that is, legislating and supervising,” he stressed.

Before making the decision, the legislators formed a multiparty commission that recommended the impeachment of the president.

Some of the legislators from Llori’s party, Pachakutik, promoted the dismissal, while others defended the now former president, who asked the court for precautionary measures to prevent her dismissal, which ultimately had no effect.

For the impeachment, a minimum of 70 votes of the 137 legislators was required. In more than a year, the legislative body has barely approved 28 minor laws.
