Portugal reaches 119 cases of monkeypox

The health authorities of Portugal confirmed 19 new cases of monkeypox this Wednesday, bringing the total number of infections reported in the country to 119, all of them men and with a “stable” picture and most under 40 years of age.

The Portuguese General Directorate of Health (DGS) specified in a statement that “most” of the infections have been reported in Lisbon and the Tagus Valley, although cases have also been registered in the North and Algarve (south) regions.

He added that the patients are between 20 and 61 years old and that they are all with “clinical monitoring.”

This week, the DGS issued instructions on how “probable or confirmed” cases of this virus should proceed, which include recommendations such as isolation or physical distancing until the scabs fall off, sexual abstinence, and avoiding cohabitation with children, pregnant women, and immunosuppressed people. .

They add not sharing objects for personal use, such as clothing, bedding, towels, avoiding contact with pets and other animals, “especially rodents”, and, for those who need to move somewhere, to cover themselves “as much as possible.” possible” injuries with clothing, in addition to wearing a mask.

For health workers, it recommends wearing personal protective equipment (PPE), including an FFP2 mask, gown, disposable gloves and eye protection, which must be removed “carefully”.

Monkeypox or “monkeypox”, of the Orthopoxvirus genus, is a rare disease transmissible through contact with infected animals or people or with contaminated materials.
