Deep pain in Texas at the burial of teacher Irma García, murdered in the Uvalde massacre

The coffins covered with flowers were carried to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church of the town for a mass attended by the Secretary of Education, Miguel Cardona.

“We must unite as a country against this senseless cycle of violence”the official wrote in a statement.

Five victims, including two children, remained hospitalized Wednesday in the city of San Antonio, according to media.

The first funerals for the students killed in the attack were held on Tuesday. As the community mourned the victims, anger flared over the police’s delayed response during the incident.

After intense criticism, the director of the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), Steven McCraw, admitted that it was a “wrong decision” to wait more than an hour to neutralize the attacker.

This tragedy, the latest in an epidemic of gun violence in the United States in recent years, has prompted desperate calls from many quarters for Congress to pass stricter laws on the sale and possession of firearms.
