Shooting in Tulsa: the attacker was looking for the doctor who operated on his back and killed him because he couldn’t stand the pain

Michael Louis, a man who blamed his surgeon for ongoing pain after recent back surgery, bought an AR-style rifle hours before open fire at a Tulsa doctor’s office, USAkilling the surgeon and three other people before committing suicide, police said Thursday.

The police chief of TulsaWendell Franklin says the gunman he had recently undergone back surgery and had repeatedly called a clinic complaining of pain.

Franklin said the doctor who performed the surgery, Dr. Preston Phillips, was killed Wednesday, along with another doctor, a receptionist and a patient.

“We also have a letter about the suspect, which makes it clear that he entered with the intention of killing Dr. Phillips and anyone who stood in his way”Franklin said. “He blamed Dr. Phillips for the continued pain after the surgery.”

Authorities said the gunman was carrying a rifle and a pistol during the shooting at the medical building on a hospital campus, the latest in a series of deadly mass shootings across the country in recent weeks.

Wednesday’s shooting on the campus of the Saint Francis Health System occurred the same week that families in UvaldeTexas, began burying the dead of the deadliest school shooting in nearly a decade.

The victims and the attacker in Tulsa were found on the second floor of a doctor’s office where an orthopedic clinic is located, police said. The shooter, whose name has not been released, died apparently of a self-inflicted gunshot woundsaid the deputy chief of the Police Department of TulsaEric Dalgleish.

The hospital said in a statement it was “grieving the loss of four members of our community” but did not immediately identify the dead.

The recent wave of gun violence across the country, including the murder of 19 children and two teachers at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde at the hands of an 18 year old armed man who was carrying an AR-style semi-automatic rifle, has prompted Democratic leaders to expand their calls for tighter restrictions on guns, while Republicans are emphasizing safer schools.

The divide reflects a partisan divide that has stymied action in Congress and in many state capitols on the best way to respond to a record number of gun-related deaths in the United States.

It was not clear what sparked the deadly assault on TulsaDalgleish said. Subsequently, authorities executed a search warrant at a home in Muskogeeabout 70 kilometers (45 miles) southeast of Tulsain connection with the investigation, police said.

“It appears that both weapons at one time or another were fired at the scene,” Dalgleish said. “The officers that arrived were hearing gunshots in the building, and that’s what led them to the second floor.”

Police responded to the call about three minutes after dispatchers received the report at 4:52 p.m. and made contact with the gunman at 5:01 p.m., Dalgleish said.

The time it took for police officers to Uvalde stand up to gunman during deadly school shooting Texas the past week has become a key focus of that investigation. Officers waited more than an hour to break into the classroom where the shooter attacked.

The police captain of TulsaRichard Meulenberg also said that several people were injured and that the medical complex was a “catastrophe scene.” The exact number of injured was not immediately available.

The St. Francis Health System closed its campus Wednesday afternoon due to the situation in the Natalie Medical Building, which houses outpatient clinics and other medical offices.

“This campus is sacred ground for our communitysaid Tulsa Mayor GT Bynum. “For decades, this campus has been a place where heroes come to work every day to save the lives of people in our community.”

Bynum added: “At this time, my thoughts are with the victims. If we want to have a policy discussion, that’s something to have in the future, but not tonight.”

Philip Tankersley, 27, was leaving his father’s room at nearby Saint Francis Hospital around 5 p.m. when hospital staff said there was an active shooter in the building across the street, he locked the doors and warned them to stay away from the windows.

Tankersley said he and his mother holed up in his father’s hospital room for more than an hour, trying to learn tidbits of information from television news and passing nurses. He said they heard “code silver” and “trauma level 1” announced over hospital speakers and wondered if they were safe in the room.

“I wasn’t particularly worried because the two people I have to take care of were in the same room as me.”, said. “But it was definitely a ‘this is happening here’ moment.”

Wednesday’s shooting also comes just over two weeks after the shooting at a Buffalo supermarket by a white man accused of killing 10 black people in a racist attack. The recent Memorial Day weekend saw multiple mass shootings across the country, including at an outdoor festival in Taft, Oklahoma, 45 miles from Tulsa, even as single-death incidents accounted for the majority of deaths. firearm deaths.

Since January, there have been 12 shootings that have killed four or more people, according to The Associated Press/USA TODAY/Northeastern University Mass Murder Database. Those shootings have left 76 dead, including 31 adults and children in Buffalo and Texas, the database says. The death toll does not include those suspected in the shootings.
