About 800 civilian refugees in Severodonetsk chemical plant, in Ukraine, according to officials

Around 800 civilians are sheltering in a chemical plant in the city of Severodonetsk, in eastern Ukrainewhere the Ukrainian and Russian armies have been clashing for several days, said Tuesday the American lawyer of the tycoon Dmytro Firtach, owner of the plant.

“Around 800 civilians have taken refuge in the shelters of the Azot chemical plant, owned by Dmytro Firtach’s DF Group,” Lanny Davis, a lawyer for the Ukrainian tycoon, said in a statement.

“Among the 800 civilians are about 200 of the plant’s 3,000 employees and about 600 residents of Severodonetsk”, he added.

Contacted by AFP, the Ukrainian presidency had not confirmed the information as of late Tuesday.

According to the statement published on the Grupo DF website, the 200 employees still present at the plant “remain (…) to guarantee the protection of the highly explosive chemical products that are still in place.”

The Azot plant is located in Severodonetska key strategic city in the Lugansk region in the east, which Russian troops have been trying to take completely for several weeks.
