Pedro Castillo highlights in his speech in the US the benefits of three decades of Summits of the Americas

The President of Peru, peter castlehighlighted this Wednesday the benefits that the initiative of the Summits of the Americas“common heritage” of the continent, and especially the commitments to confront corruption adopted in the last meeting, which took place in Lima in 2018.

“This platform (…) is once again a valuable management tool to move from words to deeds”he claimed Castle at the opening ceremony of the IX Summit of the Americaswhich will last until this Friday.

Before giving way to the host head of state, Joe Biden, Castleas president of the country where the previous summit was held, He highlighted the advantages provided by the “space for joint action” that these continental meetings allow.

And he specifically cited the Lima Commitment approved at the 2018 Lima summit to deal with “one of the most widespread, persistent and damaging problems in the hemisphere and in the world: corruption.”

“On that occasion -he added- we established the need to go beyond the agreements, and we recognized the importance of giving continuity to the commitments reached”.

Today, the region is facing “renewed challenges” due to the “unprecedented situation” arising from the coronavirus pandemic “and the international situation.”

But Castillo was confident that the meeting in Los Angeles, opened with great controversy because Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela were not invited, can contribute “a significant achievement” to reinforce joint actions on the continent.
