Small animal, big inconvenience. Several municipalities in British Columbia, Canada, recently suffered a power outage along with a loss of Internet access. The culprit: a beaver.
The cut occurred on June 7, reports CTV Newsrelayed by Capital. The outage lasted eight hours. While only 21 households were affected by the power cut, around ten villages lost their Internet connection.
“It happens from time to time”
BC Hydro, the company responsible for distributing electricity to much of the Canadian province, conducted its investigation. His teams discovered that several cables had been damaged. There was no doubt about the bite marks: a beaver had come to chew on the threads.
“It’s unusual, but it happens from time to time,” BC Hydro manager Bob Gammer told CTV News. The damaged cables were in a marshy area, a popular habitat for beavers. In addition, the animal responsible for the breakdown felled a tree which, when it fell, caused a fire. The latter was fortunately brought under control without causing any casualties.
