North Korea claims hundreds of families suffer from unidentified intestinal disease

North Korea reported on Friday that hundreds of families were suffering from an unidentified intestinal disease, increasing pressure against its fragile health system, already hit by the covid-19 coronavirus.

To date, more than 4.5 million cases of “fever” and 73 deaths have been registered, in a population of 25 million people practically unvaccinated, according to data published by state media.

Added to this is now a new “acute enteric epidemic” this week in South Hwanghae province, according to the official KCNA agency. Kim Jong Un He urged those responsible to “contain the epidemic as soon as possible.”

In a sign that could show the seriousness of the situation, Kim Yo-jong, the powerful sister of the North Korean leader, was part of a group of top officials who participated in the donation of medicines to contain the situation.

The treatment will be delivered to “more than 800 families suffering from the enteric epidemic which was recorded in various areas of South Hwanghae province,” KCNA said on Friday.

According to these data, at least 1,600 people would suffer from these intestinal disorders.

Several reports suggested that it could be cholera or typhus.
