Ukraine bans broadcast of Russian music and import of Russian books

The Verkhovna Rada, the unicameral Parliament of Ukrainetoday approved a law that prohibits the broadcast on radio and television and the performance in public spaces of music by Russian artists, according to Ukrainian media reports.

By law, the reproduction of works by singers who are citizens of an aggressor state or who are legally registered in the Russian Federation will be prohibited, explained Pavel Frolov, a deputy from the ruling Servant of the People party, on his Telegram account.

Russian artists will also not be able to perform on tours of Ukraine, with the exception of those who have publicly condemned the Russian invasion, the media highlighted.

This exception will also apply to works broadcast on radio and television; To do this, a “white list” of artists who have distanced themselves from the Kremlin will be created, which will be managed by the National Security and Defense Council and will be public.

The restriction will be lifted once the war is over and the Russian-occupied territories return to Ukrainian control, the daily “Ukrainskaya Pravda” reported.

In addition, the law, which had been presented in Parliament by several parties, including that of the president, Volodímir Zelensky, provides for minimum quotas for songs in the Ukrainian language, which must account for at least 40% of those that are broadcast in the media.

At the same time, at least 75% of the information and entertainment content of the radio must use the official state language, Ukrainian.

On the other hand, Frolov announced that the Rada has also ratified the ban on importing and distributing printed products, mainly books, from Russia, Belarus and the occupied territories in Ukraine (referring to the Crimean peninsula and the breakaway republics in Donbas). .

In addition, to import books printed in the “language of the aggressor” from other countries, it will be necessary to obtain a special license.
