Chinese President Xi Jinping will visit Hong Kong

President Chinese Xi Jinping will visit Hong Kong to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the former British colony’s return to China, state news agency Xinhua reported on Saturday.

Xi He will also attend the inauguration of the next administration of this international finance center, Xinhua said, in what will be the president’s first trip outside mainland China since the start of the covid-19 pandemic.

“The President Xi jinping will attend a meeting to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the return of Hong kong to the homeland”reported Xinhua.

The last visit of Xi to the former British colony was in 2017 on the occasion of the inauguration of outgoing CEO Carrie Lam. It is common for Chinese leaders to flock to the city for symbolic anniversaries of the retrocession.

This time, the coronavirus outbreaks in both mainland China and Hong kong had raised doubts as to whether Xi he would risk traveling to the city that has a less strict health policy than Beijing.
