Canada: US ruling on abortion threatens other rights

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau He warned on Saturday that the US Supreme Court’s decision to strike down the constitutional right to abortion could lead to the loss of other rights and indicated that his country will continue to allow American women to have abortions in Canada.

Trudeau described the court’s decision as “horrendous” and expressed fear that the ruling would one day allow a rollback of legal protections for same-sex relationships, including the right to marry.

“We know this is not only a scary time, but an extremely daunting time for many women,” he pointed Trudeau at a press conference in Kigali, Rwanda, during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.

“For generations, women have fought for more rights in the United States, (only) to see this setback, and also worry about how this can expand and take away more rights in the United States,” Indian.

“This is a reminder of how we must be steadfast in our defense of the rights of people, in not taking anything for granted, in remaining vigilant and in always defending the rights of women, the rights of the LBGT community and the rights of disenfranchised and marginalized people,” he added.

Asked if his government will help American women seeking abortions in Canada, Trudeau He did not respond directly, but did say: “Americans who are in Canada access our health system Canada And that is something that will certainly continue.”

However, the need to travel and have a passport makes the cost prohibitive for some Americans.

The US Supreme Court ruling could extend abortion bans to nearly half of its states.
