Georgia Man Sentenced to Death for Killing Two Corrections Officers Commits Suicide in Prison

A man from Georgia, USAwho was recently sentenced to death for the murder of two prison officers during an escape attempt five years ago, died in prison by apparent suicide, prison officials said.

The prison guards found ricky dubose unconscious in his cell Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison in Jackson around 4:45 p.m. Sunday, according to a news release from the Department of Corrections. The guards called for medical help. The prison coroner pronounced dubose at 5:56 p.m.

dubose29, was sentenced to death on June 16 after being convicted of murder in the June 2017 shooting death of Sgt. Christopher Monica and Curtis Billue.

Dubose and Donnie Rowe they were being transported between prisons along with other inmates when they killed the two guards and escaped from the bus in Putnam County, southeast of Atlanta, on June 13, 2017. They were arrested days later in Tennessee.

dubose he was accused of firing the gun that killed the officers after he and Rowe slipped out of their handcuffs and walked through an open door at the front of the bus. Prosecutors say that Dubose grabbed the gun from one of the officers and shot Monica, the guard, and then Billue, the driver, both in the head. Security cameras on the bus recorded the violent escape, and approximately 30 other inmates witnessed the killings.

Rowe was convicted of murder in September. A judge sentenced him to life in prison without parole after jurors could not agree on whether he should be sentenced to death.

The Department of Corrections is working with the Bureau of Investigation of Georgia to investigate the death of dubosewhich is a standard procedure.
