Pope Francis: “Latin America is still a victim of exploitative imperialism”

The Pope Francisco considers that Latin America even “is a victim of exploitative imperialism” and urged to work for the dream of unity of San Martín and Bolívar. These messages were part of an extensive interview with the Argentine news agency Telam and released this Friday.

“Latin America is still on that slow path, of struggle, of the dream of San Martín and Bolívar for the unity of the region”assured the Argentine pontiff in the interview granted to Bernarda Llorente in his residence inside the Vatican.

The region “it was always a victim, and it will be a victim until it is freed from exploitative imperialism”, underlined Francisco, who did not want to indicate what they are.

“I don’t want to mention them because they are so obvious that everyone sees them”, he added.

Asked about the political changes that have taken place in several Latin American countries, with popular and inclusive projects that reject neoliberalism, the Argentine pope recalled that “the dream of San Martín and Bolívar is a prophecy”.

“We must work to achieve Latin American unity. Where each people feels itself with its identity and, at the same time, in need of the identity of the other. Is not easy”, he assured.

The first Latin American pope in history, 85 years old, who will celebrate 10 years of pontificate next year, made a kind of balance of his work, spoke about the war in Ukraine, the pandemic, young people and confessed that he feels that has left aimprint” in the church of Latin America.

“The Latin American Church has a history of closeness to the very large people”, he stressed.

“If we take the episcopal conferences —the first in Medellín, then Puebla, Santo Domingo and Aparecida— it was always in dialogue with the people of God. And that helped a lot. It is a popular church, in the real sense of the word”, he explained.
