“We want to find the truth”: exhume the body of the Mexican Debanhi Escobar for a third autopsy at the request of the family

Mexican authorities exhumed this Friday the body of Debanhi Escobaran 18-year-old girl found dead in April in a motel in the northern state of Nuevo León whose mysterious alleged femicide remains unsolved.

“In a way we requested this situation to try to be able to find the truth. Because I know that Debanhi would have wanted it that way, ”the young woman’s father, Mario Escobar, said in a brief message to the media outside the cemetery where she was buried.

The objective of exhuming the body is to carry out a new autopsy and compare the forensic opinions, one from the State Prosecutor’s Office and another independent one requested by Debanhi’s relatives and who have differed on the cause of the young woman’s death.

Debanhi Escobar’s body exhumed again

The necropsy carried out by the Nuevo León Prosecutor’s Office determined that Debanhi died of a “deep skull contusion”, however, the independent report revealed that the young woman’s body had “traces of a violent sexual relationship” and blows that indicate an alleged murder.

“(The goal is) to believe in the authorities again. To me, regardless of whether the federal government, the state government or the Prosecutor’s Office finds the truth. What we want is the truth”, insisted the father of the young woman.

Escobar said he trusts that the new forensic opinion will reveal the true cause of Debanhi’s death. Since the family does not agree with the expertise of the State Prosecutor’s Office.

“We want to believe in the authorities”

He pointed out that this could mark “a watershed” so that in other cases the investigations are done in another way.

“What need is there to get to this point when things could have been done well from the beginning? What we want is to believe again in the Prosecutor’s Office, believe again in the authorities”, he concluded.

The Undersecretary of Security of Mexico, Ricardo Mejía, had confirmed on Thursday that the Nuevo León Prosecutor’s Office requested the Judiciary to exhume Debanhi’s body.

Mysterious death of Debanhi Escobar

In addition, he reported that on Wednesday a new search was carried out at the motel where the young woman’s body was found.

The Mexican government promised to clarify the still mysterious death of Debanhi. Whose body appeared on April 21 in a motel cistern in Nuevo León after having disappeared on April 9.

Debanhi’s death has caused an international stir due to the image that went viral of her abandoned on the road by a taxi driver, who allegedly harassed her. As well as the alleged failures of the Nuevo León Prosecutor’s Office, which first investigated the case as an accident.

President meets with parents of the young woman

In mid-May, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador met with Debanhi’s parents and promised that there will be no impunity in the case.

In Mexico, on average, more than 10 women are murdered each day between intentional homicides and femicides, murders classified by gender.
