More than $2.5 million raised for 2-year-old boy who lost parents in Chicago shooting

A fundraiser launched online to help Aiden McCarthy, a two-year-old boy whose parents died Monday in the shooting near Chicago exceeded $2.5 million on Wednesday, according to the website.

Irina and Kevin McCarthy, 35 and 37, were attending the 4th of July parade in Highland Park when a man opened fire on the crowd from the roof of a store.

In the midst of panic the townspeople picked up Aiden and carried him to safety.

He was later picked up by his grandparents, according to authorities, who confirmed Tuesday that his parents were among the seven dead.

Irina and Kevin McCarthy were killed in Monday’s mass shooting at the 4th of July parade in Highland Park, USA.

Robert Crimo, 21, opened fire indiscriminately into the crowd with a semi-automatic rifle. He also injured more than thirty people.

He was arrested on Monday after several hours. He is charged with murder and faces life imprisonment.

The amount of fundraising open Tuesday on the participatory site GoFundMe It was set at $500,000. On Wednesday afternoon it exceeded 2.5 million, contributed by more than 46,000 donors.

One of them is millionaire William Ackman, who donated $18,000, according to the site.

On the day of the tragedy, Ackman criticized the authorities on his Twitter account, accusing them of not acting on the shootings. On Tuesday she retweeted a photo of the boy.
