When Elon Musk speaks: from commenting on the war in Ukraine to giving a “solution” to the conflict between China and Taiwan

Elon Musk returns to the load. First there was the controversy over the purchase of Twitter. He got the money, made an offer, questioned the information that the social network shared with him, wanted to escape from the commitment and now they are forcing him to close the transaction. Then came his tweet about Ukrainea survey with several crazy proposals to end the war:

to which the president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyanswered:

And now Musk is drawing the spotlight for talking about the conflict between China and Taiwanjust when “tensions” between both countries “reach their highest point in decades”. According to the millionaire, there is a way out to end his dispute: “My recommendation would be to find a special administrative area for Taiwan that is reasonably acceptable. Probably won’t make them all happy”, he declared to Financial Times.

And I add: “And it is possible. And I think that probably, in fact, they could have an agreement that is more lenient than the Hong Kong”.

In response, Su Tseng-chang, Prime Minister of Taiwanheld: “Musk is an entrepreneur […] He has a large car factory in Shanghai and wants to promote his electric vehicles […] A businessman, one day says one thing and another day says another”.

Musk is just talking to himself, but he really doesn’t know enough about Taiwan and does not understand relationships [con China]”, he added.

China, by contrast, applauded the owner of Tesla.

The Chinese Ambassador to the United States Qin Gangmaintained that the idea was precise and that it could “achieve national reunification with one country and two systems”. Mao Ning, Chinese Foreign Ministeralso praised the proposal and said that it was valid to achieve the long-awaited “peaceful assembly”.

The comments of Elon Musk they would not be free. According to him American political scientist Ian BremmerMusk told him that he had spoken with Vladimir Putin on war in ukraine and a way out for peace. The millionaire denied the statements, and maintained that he had not communicated with the Russian for “18 months”. Bremmer later supported his statement:

I spoke to Elon two weeks ago, and he told me that Putin (in a direct conversation with him) was ‘ready to negotiate’ (as he had heard from members of the Shanghai cooperation organization the week before) and had outlined the minimum that the Russian president would require to end the war”.

unsubstantiated opinions

The Trade spoke with Miguel Sánchez Ferrán, Panamanian political analyst and specialist in international business, to ask for your opinion on Elon Musk’s comments. “We are aware that he always wants to be on everyone’s lips. It suits him to be received as a ‘rockstar’ wherever he goes. And he always gives opinions and advice that no one asked for. He wants to make himself known as a cultured and intelligent person, but it is also clear that he can go to the dark side of the force because he is surely planning something.”.

The possibility that you have spoken with Vladimir Putin it doesn’t surprise him either. The Russian usually maintains good relations with the tycoons of the world, so surely “the government of USA will be a little more aware of what Musk does”.

LOOK: Turkey tries again to be a mediator to stop the war. But does he have a real chance of doing it?

For Sánchez Ferrán, there is an important issue that can help understand Musk’s ability to tweet about complex issues, such as the war in ukraine and now the relationship between China Y Taiwan. He moves in Twitter, where you feel important and your comments bounce off all the media. It makes sense becausewe live in an era in which RR.SS. they report in real time on everything that happens, even about the invasion itself or what happens in Iran”.

But he is not the only one who is seduced by that fantasy. “There are also people who just like the limelight and believe that their opinions and solutions will end the problems, but end up generating fake news. Social networks are, finally, the best places for the cult of personality and ego”.

However, the specialist points out that these types of phrases -whether they are said on online platforms or in interviews- can generate many more problems than benefits. “Right now, US industries are experiencing a shortage of microchips, so they can’t produce the same things they used to. This is clearly due to the tensions between China, USA Y Taiwan”, says Sánchez Ferrán.

And he concludes: “And being Taiwan one of the nations that manufactures the most microchips, their words can be sensitive for the interests of their companies.”.

What is happening between Taiwan and China?

In 1949, the Communist Party led by Mao Zedong took possession of Beijing. In response, the nationalist Chiang Kai-shek fled to Taiwan. About a million and a half people followed him. Thus came the division between the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of China (Taiwan). Since then, China is interested in recovering the territory -which is so important to USA because of its key geographic location – with its policy of “one china”.
