According to municipal, state and federal authorities, the increase in migrants is an average of 200 people each day, a rise that has put them in check since, they said, the capacity of the different shelters is exceeded.

The refugees are near the edge of the Rio Grande (Rio Grande in the US), the natural border between Mexico and the United States, and it is precisely in that area where they received donations and advice.

The protection coordinator of the International Rescue Committee (IRC), Estefani Beltrán del Río, indicated that these actions have been joined by different organizations such as the World Organization for Migration (IOM), the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (Acnur) and Integral Human Rights in Action (DHIA), in addition to government institutions.

“Different protection services are provided to them, to support basic needs, health services, legal advice, access to information, protection for girls and women,” explained to EFE.

One of the benefited refugees was the Venezuelan Juan Carlos Ramos, who said that the help they have been given is “something wonderful”.

“I came migrating with the idea of getting ahead. This help that they give us here is important, wonderful, since we do not have any resources, this is a help from heaven. I had nowhere to sleep, nowhere to eat.” exposed.

In addition, he said that many of his compatriots are migrating and that he knows that more migrants are coming from Panama. “And you can’t imagine how difficult it is to cross into the United States.”

Dignify migrants

Miguel Giacoman is one of the people who supports this group of migrants in the IRC and is part of the pastoral team of the Olivo Community Church.

“Several members agreed and we put together 500 portions of food, shoes, clothing and a mobile shower. We want to dignify the situation of migrants, so that they feel loved, there are people who embrace them”, express.

He said that they have seen many undocumented immigrants who walked many kilometers practically barefoot in parts of their journey, they even needed shoes more than food, while they had weeks without washing, because they did not have the conditions.

“Here you see 40 volunteers, but there were more than 3,000 people who supported this, we are going to continue supporting as far as we can help”, he pointed.

The migration crisis is the result of the agreement reached by the governments of Mexico and the United States a week ago under which the US government will offer 24,000 visas for Venezuelans and will return to Mexican territory all those who cross the border irregularly.

The US plan with Venezuelan migrants is similar to the one that already exists for citizens of Ukraine, which grants a two-year temporary status to those with a sponsor.
