Sunni cleric’s sermon sparked riots, Iran government says

The deputy minister for security issues Interior Ministry of IranMayid Mirahmadi, indicated this Saturday that the Friday sermon of the high Sunni cleric Moulaví Abdol Hamid in the city ​​of zahedan has sparked protests and riots in that city.

“Yesterday’s sermon Moulavi Abdolhamid was provocative and unfortunately, after his sermon, a few 150 rioters took advantage of his speech and attacked people’s property, private cars, shops, and Sunni property, but it was quickly brought under control and the situation calmed down,” said Mirahmadi in statements broadcast by the Iranian news agency Tasnim.

The police commander of the province of Sistan BaluchestanAhmad Taherí, indicated yesterday that the protests began after the Friday prayer sermon and thatprotesters shouted slogans and threw stonesto shops, cars and “to several banks”.

Taheri He indicated that the police have arrested 57 of the protesters and assured that all their leaders have been identified.

Iran experiences some protests that began on September 16, after the death of a Kurdish youth in police custody who had been arrested allegedly for wearing the veil incorrectly.

The demonstrations are being harshly repressed by the security forces, and at least 108 people have lost their lives, including 23 minors, according to the NGO Iran Human Rightsbased on Oslo.

Mirahmadi indicated today that the demonstrations continue in some provinces and that in some universities there are brief concentrations which in his opinion have a decreasing trend.
