Mexico takes action after the first case of bird flu

The government of Mexico has implemented actions to control and eradicate the bird flu in the country, after the first case of the H5N1 type was reported in recent days in Metepec, in the central Mexico statereported this Monday the Ministry of Agriculture.

“The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development reinforces epidemiological surveillance actions in the 32 entities and establishes new measures to guarantee that production units comply with minimum biosafety measures (MMB)”The agency said in a statement.

For this, he explained, they will reinforce the National Animal Health Emergency Device (Dinesa) implemented on June 3, so now farms must register as Poultry Production Units (UPA) and hire an authorized veterinary doctor, who is required to take a course and pass an exam.

In addition, the production units must process with the United States-Mexico Commission for the Prevention of Foot-and-Mouth Disease and Other Exotic Animal Diseases (CPA) of the National Service for Agrifood Health, Safety and Quality (Senasica), an official certificate of compliance with the minimum biosafety measures (MMB).

Farms that are located in a disease-free zone and that comply with the MMB certificate, may move live animals through the Poultry Mobilization Notice (AMA).

Regarding broiler farms located in areas of low prevalence with proof of MMB, they may only move to other states with the same status and negative laboratory results.

Regarding the mobilization of excreta for use as fertilizers, Roberto Navarro López, director of the Senasica CPA, pointed out that the so-called chicken manure and chicken manure must be subjected to a thermal treatment of 56 degrees Celsius for 30 minutes, a procedure that must also be certified by authorized veterinarian.

In addition, untreated excreta may only be moved in closed transport to ensure that the remains are not spread, up to a maximum of 20 kilometers in agricultural areas and no less than 3 kilometers from another poultry farm.

According to the authorities, the objective is to protect poultry production from highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) AH5N1 and advance in the control and eradication of HPAI H7N3 throughout the country.

The General Director of Animal Health of the senasicaJuan Gay Gutiérrez, emphasized that with the application of these measures, poultry producers have the opportunity to eradicate the disease, which has been present in the country for more than 10 years.

Last Friday, the World Organization for Animal Health (WHOA) reported that the avian influenza virus was detected in a wild bird in the municipality of Metepec, in the Mexico state.
