France: 68 migrants trying to go to England were rescued at sea

The french authorities announced the rescue of two boats with 68 migrants trying to illegally reach the shores of Englandone in the night from Thursday to Friday and another during the morning of Friday.

These new rescue operations were carried out as attempts by undocumented immigrants to clandestinely reach the United Kingdom.

The Maritime Prefecture of the English Channel and the North Sea told EFE this Saturday that since August they have been more than 9,000 people per month by sea and in total there are already more than 43,000 since the beginning of the year.

In that time, there is evidence of one death and more than 6,400 migrants.

In a statement, the Maritime Prefecture of La Mancha and the North Sea explained last night in a statement that the 68 people assisted since Thursday were taken to the port of Calais, where they were left in the hands of the emergency services and the Air and Border Police (PAF), in charge of verifying their legal status.

The first of the boats was detected off Calais and its 33 occupants were embarked on the customs patrol boat Jacques Oudart Fourmentinwhich transferred them to the port of this city, from where a good part of the ferries that connect France with England leave and where the submarine railway tunnel also begins in the direction of Britain.

The second was near the city of Dunkirk and it was the patrol of the French Navy Pluvierwhich came to his aid and transferred the 35 castaways who were on board to Calais.

The Maritime Prefecture insisted once again in its statement on the “risks” of the crossing of the English Channel, in one of the busiest maritime sectors (more than 400 ships pass through there every day) and with often difficult weather conditions: 120 days a year with winds of force 7 or higher.

On the second weekend of this month of October, the French services they rescued 387 immigrants there who were also headed for British shores.

In 2019, the French services they counted 203 boats with 2,294 immigrants in the English Channel and there were 4 deaths; the following year there were 868 boats with 9,551 people and 7 deaths; in 2021 the figure rose to 1,839 boats with 35,382 people, 30 dead and 4 missing.
