Lula’s party calls for the arrest of the director of the Highway Police for obstructing the vote with checkpoints

The Workers’ Party (PT) of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva requested the arrest of the director of the Federal Highway Police for obstructing the elections this Sunday with checkpoints that have stopped hundreds of buses with voters.

In a message on Twitter, the president of the PT, Gleisi Hoffmanasked the parliamentarians of his coalition that they go to the places where the Police checkpoints are located and “give arrest warrants to the police officers.”

The Federal Highway Police This Sunday, he carried out an operation on numerous highways in the country, stopping buses carrying people who were on their way to vote in the presidential elections.

According to the daily Folha de São Paulo, at least 514 buses were stopped across the country as of noon.

Due to this operation, the head of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), Alexandre de Moraes, summoned the director of the Federal Highway Police, Silvinei Vasques, to explain the reason for these operations.

The electoral authority had previously prohibited any police action that could make it difficult to transport voters.

Numerous videos circulate on social networks in which checkpoints of the Federal Highway Police mounted in several cities of the country, mainly in the northeast region, which constitutes the main stronghold of Lulathe president’s rival Jair Bolsonaro in the second round of the presidential elections.

Senator Humberto Costa, Lula’s partner in the Workers’ Party (PT), stated on Twitter that they have received several complaints about “the completely illegal action” of the Police.

“They are trying to end one of the most sacred rights of our Constitution: the vote. It is an action with clearly electoral objectives. Let the northeast vote!” Costa said.

On this day, which began at 08:00 local time (11:00 GMT) and will close at 17:00 (20:00 GMT), some 156.4 million voters are called to elect the president and twelve of the 27 governors who also went to the Second round.
