The G7 condemns Russian escalation against Iranian infrastructure and use of drones

The G7 condemned today, at the ministerial meeting held in Münster (western Germany), the escalation of attacks by Russia against critical infrastructure and other civilian targets in Ukraine, as well as the use of Iranian drones in these operations.

“We particularly condemn the attacks on energy facilities and water supply,” points out the statement released by the foreign ministers of the United States, Japan, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Italy and Germany, the country that holds the rotating presidency of the group of the seven most industrialized powers.

The document also warns that the use of “any chemical, biological or nuclear weapon” by Russia will entail “serious consequences” and Moscow is again demanded to end the war in Ukraine.

“Russia’s nuclear rhetoric is unacceptable,” the text continues, alluding to the threats launched these days by President Vladimir Putin about a hypothetical response to the “dirty bomb” that, according to the Kremlin leader, has Ukraine.

The G7 also announces the establishment of a coordination mechanism to help Ukraine in the repair of damaged infrastructure and in the defense of its energy facilities and supply of running water.

On his second and last day of the ministerial meeting, the G7 also urged Russia to extend the agreement for the transport of cereals through the Black Sea corridor as well as to guarantee its continuity, after it was suspended for several days by decision of the Kremlin.

The foreign ministers of the group of seven industrial powers consider the maintenance of these supplies “crucial” and warn of the global repercussions that a new interruption would have.

The issue is part of the agenda of the second day of the ministerial meeting, in which the fight against famine in Africa will also be addressed with representatives from that continent.

“The war drags the population suffering from famine into an even more desperate situation. We have to create strategies to clearly show which side we are on.” British Foreign Minister James Cleverly told German public television WDR.

Already yesterday, the German Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock, had announced a coordinated action plan to Ukraine between the G7 countries – the United States, Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom, Italy and France, together with Germany -, which holds the rotating presidency of the G7.

Before today’s new plenary session, a meeting was held in a reduced format with four members – the United States, France, Germany and the United Kingdom – in which the issues considered “most sensitive” were addressed.

This meeting was followed by a bilateral meeting between Baerbock and the new Italian Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, of the Forza Italia party, to then resume the deliberations between the seven members, in addition to the High Representative for Foreign Policy of the European Union (EU), Joseph Borrell.
