The president indicated that “There are no publishers in the United States anymore. There are no editors. How do we expect children to understand what is at risk?

The president’s comments followed Friday’s news that Twitter had laid off thousands of employees across the company, a severe round of cost-cutting that could upend the way one of the world’s most influential platforms operates a week after Musk would acquire it.

Twitter loses 4 million dollars a daywhich justifies the layoffs of personnel, as published this Friday by its new owner, the billionaire Elon Musk. Although he did not specify the total number of dismissals – the press has put them at more than 3,700which represents more than half of its global workforce – Musk justified them in a tweet saying that “there is no other choice when the company is losing about four million a day.”

On Friday morning, Musk He had already said that the company had had a drastic drop in income, which he attributed to a stampede of advertisers because of “activist groups” that allegedly pressure companies to withdraw advertising.

As for the dismissed employees, who on Friday received an email with the termination of their contract in their mail -because the offices remained closed by order of the owner-, Musk assured this afternoon that all those laid off have had an offer of three months compensation“which is 50% more than legally required.”

Despite this offer, some have already sued the company for unfair dismissal, because according to current labor laws in San Francisco (where Twitter’s headquarters are located), an employee must receive a minimum of 60 days’ notice, which which has not been fulfilled in this case.

In another earlier tweet on Friday afternoon, Musk he referred to the content moderation policies, which according to him “remain absolutely unchanged”, and added: “contrary to what you can read in the press, in fact we have seen at certain times of the week that hate speech decreased below our previous standards.”

Musk then linked to content from Twitter Trust and Safety chief Yoel Roth, who said his dedicated “moderation front line” team had suffered the least cuts.

Even so, and despite all these messages, companies like General Motors either volkswagen They have suspended their advertising on Twitter until it becomes clearer where the company is heading in terms of content.
