Twitter: The UN urges Musk to ensure respect for human rights on the social network

The High Commissioner of UN for Human Rights, Volker Turk, on Saturday urged the new owner of Twitter, Elon Muskto ensure respect for these rights in the social network.

Reports that Musk fired the entire company team in charge of such matters “are not, from my perspective, a good start,” Turk wrote in an open letter.

The diplomat declared his “concern and apprehension” about “the role of Twitter” in the digital public space.

The platform announced this Friday the dismissal of “close to 50%” of its 7,500 employees in the world, a week after being acquired by Musk, the richest man on the planet, for 44,000 million dollars.

“Like all companies, Twitter needs to understand the harms related to its platform and take steps to address them,” the UN High Commissioner wrote.

“Respect for our common human rights must be the parapet for the use and evolution of the platform,” he added.
