Evo Morales does not see attempts at a “coup d’état” in the conflict over the census

The former president of bolivia Evo Morales (2006-2019) considered this Sunday that behind the protests over the population census in the country there is no intention of giving a “coup d’état” to the Government of louis arceas the national authorities warned, but it is a “plan” to divide the ruling party and damage the economy.

In a thread on Twitter, Morales asked “more solutions and less discussions” to resolve the strike that Santa Cruz, the largest Bolivian region, has been carrying out for 16 days to demand that the census be carried out in 2023, considering that the negative effects of that measure “they destroy the family economy” and pays them “working people”

“I reiterate what I shared in meetings with our brothers president @LuchoXBolivia (Luis Arce) and vice president @LaramaDavid (David Choquehuanca): I don’t think there will be a coup. What we do notice is that some sector of the government is allied with the coup plotters. Let’s not magnify the situation please.” wrote the former ruler.

In his opinion, “some use the denunciation of the danger of a coup to pressure our people”, but considered that “with prosecuted military and police chiefs, fugitives and imprisoned” due to the 2019 crisis, “the right changed its strategy” Y “now he wants to destroy the economy, blame” to the government Movement for Socialism (MAS), “wear down the government” and divide the ruling party.

Morales also argued that “It’s time to put order” and regretted the “internal struggles and contradictions of some ministers”, aimed above all at the Minister of Government (Interior), Eduardo del Castillo, to whom the former president usually makes constant criticism.

”While the Minister of Government assumes a position in relation to the census, the Minister of the Presidency (Maria Nela Prada) disavows it. If a minister is disavowed by the government, if he has dignity, he should resign”he concluded.

The national consultation was to be held this November, but the Arce government announced in July its postponement to 2024, arguing technical reasons, which led to the protest, especially from Santa Cruz, which carried out strikes of 24 and 48 hours before going on indefinite strike. by the census in 2023.

In response to the Santa Cruz strike, sectors related to the ruling party began a “siege” with roadblocks that have isolated and left the region without food and fuel, considering that the protests over the census seek to destabilize the Arce Administration.

When inaugurating last Friday the work of the technical commission that will set the final date for the census, President Arce lamented that a “political approach” has been generated around the census and that it is used “as an instrument of destabilization of the Government” that “He also seeks to overthrow him.”

The technical table celebrates this Sunday its second day of work in the Amazonian city of Trinidad, without a time limit to define the date of registration, while in other Bolivian regions there are warnings of mobilizations and strikes since Monday in demand that the census be in 2023.
