The Egyptian president indicated that the country launched “a strategy to support human rights in Egypt” in 2021 and that Egypt is “right” in this regard, reported the official Egyptian news agency, MENA, in clear allusion to the conversations they had at the meeting on the case of Abdelfatah.

Al Sisi wanted to emphasize that a pardon committee has been formed “to follow all the cases, and prepare the lists to verify and approve them”without giving more details.

According to the White House statement, Biden, who will only spend a few hours in Egypt before leaving for Cambodia, congratulated Al Sisi for organizing COP27, in the Egyptian city of Sharm el Sheikh, and the two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to accelerate global efforts to address the climate crisis.

Likewise, the US president raised “the importance of human rights and respect for fundamental freedoms,” the note noted.

Before Biden’s trip to Sharm el Sheikh, the White House announced that the president would ask Al Sisi to undertake reforms aimed at improving respect for human rights and release all “political prisoners”, while also addressing with him the situation of the well-known activist Alaa Abdelfatah, imprisoned in Egypt.

However, the White House did not mention the name of the Egyptian activist in the statement.

The case of Abdelfatah, who has been carrying out a water strike since the start of COP27 added to a hunger strike for more than 200 days, has become one of the issues related to human rights in the framework of this climate summit. .

This issue has raised great concern for his life and has caused countries like the UK, France and Germany to take up the issue directly with Al Sisi.

According to the official Egyptian agency, Al Sisi was happy about Biden’s visit and considered it “an opportunity to promote strategic relations between the two countries.”

After Egypt, Biden will address ASEAN in Cambodia and the G20 in Indonesia, on a tour in which he is scheduled to meet his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping for the first time in Bali on Monday.
