The withdrawal of Russia from Kherson “demonstrates the incredible bravery of the Ukrainian armed forces”, but “we must not make the mistake of underestimating Russia,” Stoltenberg declared at a press conference in The Hague, after having held a meeting with the Dutch government.

“The Russian armed forces retain significant capabilities as well as large numbers of soldiers, and Russia has shown its willingness to take significant losses.”added the NATO chief.

In recent weeks, the Russian army, having difficulties on the ground, has carried out missile and drone attacks against Ukrainian civilian infrastructure, especially the energy network.

“The next few months will be difficult. Putin’s goal is to leave Ukraine cold and dark this winter.” Stoltenberg continued.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was in Kherson on Monday, where he witnessed the raising of the Ukrainian flag, three days after they were retaken from the Russian army after weeks of fighting.
