The chief of the Police Department of the University of Virginia, Tim Longo, received notification of his arrest during a press conference in Charlottesville (Virginia) about the events last night.

The incident occurred in a parking lot on the university campus, where three members of the downtown football team were killed and two other students were wounded by gunshots.

The shooting occurred on a bus that was taking several students to campus after an excursion to Washington DC, according to what the president of the University of Virginia, Jim Ryan, told the press.

The suspect fled after the attack. On him weigh three charges of second degree murder, three for the use of a firearm and another for a misdemeanor.

The police spokesman explained that the alleged attacker is 22 years old and that he was seen on campus aboard a black vehicle with a Virginia license plate.

In the past, a university threat assessment team had investigated him for “some kind of hazing”although the investigation was closed due to the lack of cooperation on the part of the witnesses.

During that investigation, it was found that Jones had been implicated in a previous criminal case related to a violation of the regulations on the obligation to carry concealed firearms and not in public.

In a statement, White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said that “Too many families across America bear the terrible burden of gun violence.”

Legislation passed in June to increase control over firearms is not enough, he added.either. “We must do more. We need to enact an assault weapons ban to get weapons of war off the streets.”
