Poland: President asks for calm and rules out invoking NATO

Polish President Andrzej Duda asked citizens for “tranquility” on Wednesday, hours after confirming that the missile that hit Poland could have been launched by Ukraine and after ruling out invoking NATO for the moment.

Duda, who convened the Council on an extraordinary basis and requested that the leaders of the government party, the ultra-nationalist Law and Justice (PiS), and the opposition participate exceptionally, stressed that the three hours of the meeting took place in a “constructive atmosphere” and with a “shared concern for issues of national security.”

The president asked Polish citizens “tranquility, despite the fact that there is a war on our border” and conveyed to the inhabitants of the eastern regions of the country, bordering Ukraine that “Don’t worry if you see unusual movements of troops or military aircraft, as “The presence of these forces is aimed at strengthening our security.”

”There is no known direct danger to Poland and its citizens. We also have no signs that there is a threat of a repeat of the tragedy that took place yesterday, although the Russian bombing may have unforeseen consequences,” the president stated.

The Polish president stressed that he remains “in contact with all allies” of the NATO and that in the last hours he spoke with the president of the United States, Joe Biden, and the secretary general of the NATO, Jens Stoltenberg.
