UN General Assembly passes resolution critical of Iran for latest riots

The Third Committee of the General Assembly of the UN approved this Wednesday by 79 votes in favor, 28 against and 68 abstentions a critical resolution with Iran for the latest riots and the extensive repression unleashed to defuse them.

Although Iran is the subject of a text from this commission dedicated to human rights in the Islamic Republic every year, on this occasion the resolution included abundant references to the latest events in a very critical tone.

So one of his points “expresses grave concern that the enforcement of the hijab and chastity law and its violent enforcement by Iranian morality police fundamentally undermine the human rights of women and girls”, and later refers to the death in police stations of Mahsa Amini, after being arrested allegedly for wearing the veil incorrectly.

All the riots sparked by that death are the subject of this year’s resolution, introduced by Canada, calling on Iran to “release all those detained for participating in peaceful demonstrations” Y “condemns the widespread use of force” to disperse them.

In the same way, it criticizes all the restrictions on the rights of assembly and association, plus the violations of freedom of expression and opinion, and demands the release of those detained for exercising some of these basic rights.

One of the paragraphs orders Iran to end the numerous limitations on the use of the Internet, access to social networks or the arbitrary blocking of certain portals or platforms, which are achieved even with a deliberate disruption of mobile phone services in general. .
