A 2-year-old boy identified as David Conde died of starvation earlier this year after being left alone after the death of his father from natural causes in the apartment where they lived in New York, USAauthorities reported Tuesday.

David Conde Sr., 59, and his son were found dead on February 15 in their Geneva apartment, about 45 miles southeast of Rochester and 55 miles southwest of Syracuse, NBC News reported.

According to the Ontario Sheriff’s Office, the father died of cardiovascular disease and the child died of starvation days later.

“It is believed that Mr. Conde passed away first, and the boy was unable to eat any food after his father passed away,” concluded the sheriff.

NBC News reported that both were last seen alive on January 22, and investigators found no signs of forced entry into the apartment or suspicion of a crime.

Family members reported that they had not heard from them for approximately a week and the search for the authorities began, Univisión reported.

The police began the search for the father’s house, but the front door was locked so they had to break in.

Both they were found together in the bedroom of the department, the father in the bed and the boy near it, according to Ontario County Sheriff David Cirencione.

“It was a very difficult scene for us to work on, for all the first responders that had to go in there. This is not something we see every day. It’s not nice. It was a very disturbing scene,” Cirencione said.

David Conde was left with custody of the child shortly after his birth. The mother was somewhat distanced from the child and they had not had recent contact, Univisión indicated.
