Colombia: Captures of 17 ELN Commanders Suspended for Peace Talks

The Prosecutor’s Office Colombia issued this Thursday a resolution suspending the arrest and extradition orders against 17 members of the National Liberation Army (ELN), including Nicholas Rodriguez Bautista Y Paul Beltranso that they can act as representatives of the guerrilla in the peace negotiations that will be resumed soon.

This measure covers Nicolás Rodríguez Bautista, Pablo Beltrán, Aureliano Carbonell, Bernardo Téllez, Gustavo Martínez, Consuelo Tapias, Silvana Guerrero, Isabel Torres, Óscar Serrano, Vivian Henao, Ricardo Pérez, Cataleya Jiménez, Eduin Restrepo, Américo Trespalacios, Manuela Márquez, Mauricio Iguarán and Simón Babón, as detailed by the Prosecutor’s Office in a statement.

Beltrán and Carbonell have experience in this type of dialogue, since they were the chief negotiators during the conversations with former president Juan Manuel Santos that they are trying to resume right now.

The information from the Prosecutor’s Office added that for these purposes the Colombian Attorney General, Francisco Barbosa, issued Resolution 00825 of November 17, 2022, by which he suspends each and every one of the arrest warrants, including those issued for the purpose of extinction, against the persons that the President of the Republic, Gustavo Petroin Resolution 265 of November 15, 2022″.

These people will be able to move inside and outside the country for peace talks, since the resolution that lifted the arrest warrants “It has immediate effect and strict compliance.”

This same week, the Colombian High Commissioner for Peace, Danilo Rueda, affirmed that the peace process with THE N It is advancing as planned and the government’s negotiating team will be officially announced over the weekend.

In addition, according to some sources consulted, the talks could be resumed next week in Caracas, although this venue may not be permanent and rotate to other places.

The resumption of talks with that guerrilla, which began in 2017 with then-President Santos and were interrupted in 2018, is one of the priorities of the government of the current president as part of his policy of “full peace”.

Delegations of the Government and the THE N announced last month in Caracas that peace talks would resume after the first week of November.
