Elon Musk reinstated Donald Trump’s Twitter account after polling his followers.

He is back. Anticipating perhaps the return of Donald Trump himself, his @realDonaldTrump account has been reactivated on Twitter. This was announced on Saturday evening by the new owner of the social network, Elon Musk. “The people have spoken. Trump will be reinstated,” the cranky businessman wrote on his own behalf after the results of a survey launched among his subscribers.

This poll was opened Friday night, hours after Musk reinstated other suspended user accounts in the name of free speech. More than fifteen million responded, and 51.8% voted “for” the Republican politician’s return to the platform. A few minutes after Elon Musk’s message, Donald Trump’s account was visible again, the last tweet was dated January 8, 2021.

The number of subscribers was erratic, rising to 3 million in less than two hours and then plummeting. The former president has 4.57 million people on the Pravda-Social network, which he launched after being ousted from Twitter.

Will Donald Trump return? Nothing less confident. During a video interview on Saturday at a Jewish Republican Coalition rally in Las Vegas, the Republican candidate hailed Elon Musk’s initiative. “I love it (…). You know, he’s a hell of a character, and I love hellish characters,” he said. But now he has his own network, he claimed then. It was on Truth Social that he encouraged his subscribers to “vote positively” before adding, “But don’t worry, we’re not going anywhere. Social truth is special.”

A decision that divides the political class

The decision to bring Donald Trump back to Twitter anyway is likely to create a bit more turmoil within a company that has already faltered since its takeover by Elon Musk. He made his mark by firing the group’s main leaders on his first day before embarking on a massive social plan. The controversial features were launched before they were delayed and leaked by advertisers.

On the side of the American political class, the rehabilitation of Trump’s account is logically divided. “Welcome back @realdonaldtrump! Republican Paul Gosar, a member of the House of Representatives, tweeted. “Anyone who thinks President Trump won’t win the 2024 primary gets a finger in the eye,” tweeted Marjorie Taylor Green, another Republican MP who is a strong supporter of the former president.

On the other hand, Republican Liz Cheney, who has become a bitter enemy of Donald Trump, reacted to the news by sending her Twitter followers to a video showing one of the hearings held by the commission of inquiry launched after the attack on the Capitol. January 6, 2021, of which she is co-chair. “Trump is back on Twitter and now is the time to watch this January 6 hearing,” she wrote. “This applies to every one of the tweets sent by Trump, including those that have been deleted, and shows how several White House officials describe his inexcusable behavior during this violence,” she added.
