That victory, which ended the albiceleste streak of 36 games without losing, also marked the fourth in the history of Saudi Arabia in its participation in the World Cups.

The Saudi authorities were not slow to react either. The head of the Entertainment Authority of Saudi Arabia and owner of Almería, Turki al Sheikh, announced on Twitter that access to two recreational parks in Riyadh would be free this Tuesday to celebrate the occasion.

Likewise, Saudi Prince Saud bin Salman, brother of the Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salmanpublished a photograph on their social networks in which they were seen hugging and kissing each other effusively.

In social networks, the memes did not take long to appear either. If at the beginning of the match the Saudis joked about how many goals Messi was going to score against them, at the end of the game the Argentine became the object of ridicule by the Arab fans.

One of the most shared posts was a doctored image from the Louis Vuitton campaign, featuring Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo playing chess. Messi’s face was replaced by that of Salem Aldawsari, the second goalscorer for the Saudi team that finished the comeback against Argentina in the 53rd minute.

Likewise, in other Arab and North African countries, such as Egypt, the Saudi victory was also widely celebrated in the streets and interpreted as an achievement of the humble Arab teams against the all-powerful Albiceleste.
