Polish President Andrzej Duda was tricked into talking to scammers posing as Emmanuel Macron the night a missile hit a village near the border with Ukraine.

His office confirmed the prank after two well-known Russian comedians posted a recording of the conversation on YouTube.

During the seven and a half minute conversation, Mr. Duda says, “Emmanuel, believe me, I’m extra careful. I don’t want a war with Russia and believe me, I’m extra careful, extra careful.”

Duda was targeted on November 15, shortly after a missile landed in eastern Poland, killing two men.

The president’s office said it was one of several international calls it received at a time of heightened tensions.

A statement on Twitter said: “Following the rocket explosion in Przewodow, during ongoing talks with heads of state and government, a person posing as French President Emmanuel Macron was transferred.

“During the conversation, due to the unusual way the interlocutor conducted the conversation, President Andrzej Duda realized that it might have been an attempt at deception and ended the conversation.”

The office said relevant services are investigating how the pranksters managed to reach Mr Duda – for the second time. In 2020, they spoke to him posing as UN Secretary General.

In the new recording, posted by Russian pranksters Vladimir Kuznetsov and Alexei Stolyarov, known as Vovan and Lexus, Mr Duda can be heard thanking a man he believes is Macron for the call.

In English he details the missile incident, his plans to request NATO consultations and how he is very careful not to exacerbate the situation with Russia.

For more than seven minutes, Mr. Duda explains to the caller, who sounds tense, that US President Joe Biden does not blame Russia for the missile incident, but that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky insists it was a missile launched by Russia.

He himself says he is “extremely careful” not to blame Russia, saying Poland will seek security talks with all NATO partners.

Opposition politicians lashed out at Mr Duda, accusing him and his office of being too lax on security.

Tomasz Trela, MP from the left-wing opposition party, said it was “an embarrassment to the special services and to everyone who should be checking who they allow to contact the Supreme Leader”.

He tweeted: “This is a blow to our security and to the opinion we hold in the eyes of our allies.”

In July 2020, the same Russian pranksters released a recording of a phone conversation with Mr Duda in which Kuznetsov posed as United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres, leaving the president speechless with questions about Ukraine, Russia and his new account. Choice.

Mr. Duda’s office also confirmed that the recording was authentic. Two Polish UN mission officials were fired over the incident.

The pranksters have previously embarrassed European politicians, including Macron and then British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, as well as Elton John and Prince Harry with similar fake calls.
