Ethane pipeline explosion in eastern Mexico leaves eleven rescuers injured

At least 11 lifeguards from different relief corporations suffered burns this Tuesday due to the explosion of an ethane pipeline that they were seeking to repair due to a leak registered in the Mexican state of veracruzEast of the country.

The State Civil Protection Secretariat reported this Tuesday that the strong explosion occurred at 3:00 p.m. (9:00 p.m. GMT) in the municipality of Agua Dulce, on the border between Veracruz and Tabasco, where a strong fire is active.

The members of municipal and state corporations and the parastatal Petróleos Mexicanos sought to control an ethane leak that had been active for 48 hours in a feeder pipeline.

During Monday night, a total of 170 inhabitants of the Miguel Alemán Valdés town were evacuated from their homes due to the threat that the product would reach their community.

The Mexican Army applied Plan DN-III, to help the population, and assisted, together with local authorities, the refugees in a temporary shelter set up in a public school.

This Tuesday morning, the task forces that were in the area announced that they would carry out a controlled burning of the product to manage the risk, which would last up to five hours.

However, at 3:00 p.m. there was an explosion in the pipeline that caused 11 injuries, all of them members of aid and attention corporations.

The state agency explained that ten of the injured have first-degree burns and blows, while one has second-degree burns.

The injured were sent to hospitals in the municipalities of Agua Dulce and Nanchital.

The fire is active and is being attended to by task forces at the point.

Veracruz is one of the main oil states in Mexico, it has extraction wells, petrochemical complexes and a refinery in its territory.
