Afghanistan: at least 15 dead and 28 injured in an attack on a seminar

At least 15 people were killed and 28 others injured, mostly young students, in a bombing attack on Wednesday during midday prayers at an Islamic center in northern Afghanistan.

The attack took place around 12:45 p.m. (8:15 GMT) in the madrasa or Islamic school of Jahadia, a training center in the city of Aybak, in the province of Samangan, “during prayers,” the director of provincial information told EFE. , Imdadullah Muhajir.

“The enemy of the nation placed explosives inside the madrasa, killing 15 students and injuring 28 others.”he detailed.

According to a witness to the incident, the attack could have been committed by a suicide bomber who blew himself up in a room full of students.

“We were in the courtyard of the madrasa when a person with a white beard came and told the students to go into the hall to distribute the pens and notebooks, when the students got together, it exploded among the students,” Bilal Atayee, one of the students, told EFE. students.

“I was outside the room and I was also going inside where the explosion happened”he added.

However, the information director of the province denied that it was a suicide attack and reiterated that the event was due to an explosive placed on the roof inside the madrasa, for which most of the victims were injured in the legs.

“No, the suicide bombing is not true, I personally visited the area, it was an explosive on the roof inside the madrasa, therefore most of the students are injured in the legs and fortunately the death toll is not it has risen so far,” Muhajir said.

So far no armed group has claimed responsibility for this attack. However, everything points to the jihadist group Islamic State (IS), which has claimed responsibility for similar attacks over the past year in Afghanistan, especially in places of worship.

Since the Taliban came to power in August last year, the Islamic State of Khorasan, the Afghan branch of the terrorist group, has emerged as the main threat to the country’s stability, although the fundamentalist government insists on deny that the armed organization represents a security challenge.

The IS has claimed responsibility for numerous attacks, especially against members of the Hazara Shiite minority, in addition to bombing and suicide attacks on mosques, schools, diplomatic or high-security areas.

Only last September at least 53 people died, including 46 girls and young women, and 110 were injured, in a suicide attack against an educational center located in a neighborhood of the discriminated Shiite Hazara minority in Kabul.

The Taliban, for their part, have led operations in various parts of the country in an attempt to dismantle the jihadists and materialize the security promises they made during the war, before coming to the government, when they ensured that the areas under their control were free of terrorism and crime.
