Germany recognizes 1930s famine as genocide Ukraine

On Wednesday evening, the Bundestag passed by an overwhelming majority a resolution recognizing the “genocide” of the famine in Ukraine, staged 90 years ago by the Stalinist regime.

The vote for the resolution, unveiled last week, was not in doubt: it was supported by the ruling coalition formed by the SPD, the Greens and the liberals of the FDP, joined by the opposition-conservative CDU-CSU.

The two extreme parties, the left with Die Linke and the right with the Alternative for Germany (AfD), abstained.

“I thank the deputies of the Bundestag for this historic decision,” Ukrainian head of state Volodymyr Zelensky responded on his Twitter account. “Truth always wins,” he added.

Resolution passed by the National Assembly

The National Assembly passed a resolution on Wednesday, passed by an overwhelming majority. The text calls for a “protective zone around the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant”, the largest in Europe, and reaffirms the Assembly’s “fullest support” for “Ukraine, its people, its sovereignty and its territorial integrity.”

The resolution, which has no legislative force, was adopted by 303 votes in favor. The LFI and RN groups mostly abstained, the LFI MP voted against.

Most of the audience applauded its adoption, turning to the Ukrainian Ambassador to France, Vadim Omelchenko, who was present in the semicircle.

The resolution “condemns in the strongest terms the brutal, unjustified and illegal attack” by Russia and its “war crimes, even crimes against humanity.”

It contains a request to “strengthen sanctions” against Russia and its President Vladimir Putin, and the French government and the European Union to support “any initiative that can contribute to ending the conflict.” She also urges “France to continue to take an active part in the reception of Ukrainian refugees.”
