“The fire brigade finished the search for victims (…) two people died and six were rescued alive,” reported the Paraná Security Secretariat in a statement.

“Six other people managed to escape from their vehicles” without requiring help, he added.

Initially, the firefighters had stated that there could be at least 30 missing, based on the estimated number of vehicles that could be buried under the mud that invaded highway BR 367, in the mountainous region of Paraná.

This Friday, the Secretary of Security reported that in total “Six heavy vehicles and three light vehicles were removed from the place,” and that “15 people” who had been reported missing “were found in other contexts unrelated to the landslide.”

The heavy rains that hit several regions of Brazil this week caused another two deaths in the state of Santa Catarina (south), which suffered mainly from flooding.

In Bahia (northeast), the water displaced more than 4,000 people from their homes.

During the last southern summer, landslides triggered by heavy rains caused hundreds of victims in Brazil.

The worst tragedy occurred last February, when more than 200 people died in Petrópolis, a tourist city located in a mountainous region near Rio de Janeiro.
