In a letter released Friday, 42 members of the 100-strong Senate recalled the Chinese Communist Party’s violent crackdown on the student-led democratic uprising that gathered in Tiananmen Square in 1989.
“We warn the Communist Party of China in the strongest possible terms not to resume a violent crackdown on peaceful Chinese protesters who simply want more freedom,” reads the letter sent Thursday to Beijing’s ambassador to Washington, Qin Gang.
“If that happens, we believe there will be serious consequences for the US-China relationship, causing it extraordinary damage,” Versa the letter, signed by Republican and Democratic senators, although more than the former.
